August 12, 2021

In this week's issue:

Message from Councilwoman Ann O'Brien

First I do NOT condone inappropriate actions from City of Phoenix employees.

Two investigative reports into actions of a few members of the Phoenix Police Department were prematurely provided to the media. What was not provided is the City Manager’s corrective action plans developed from the investigation results. The corrective action plans outline the steps that have been and are being taken to address the inappropriate decisions; employees are being reassigned, policies and procedures are being created and updated, and improved trainings are going to be implemented. Furthermore, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office is being asked to conduct a criminal and administrative investigation into other employees.

However, it is important to note that the actions of a few do not represent and entire organization. As a mother, I taught my children to not generalize and never use a blanket statement for an entire group of people based on the actions of a few. I stand with and continue to support the Phoenix Police Department, the organization that continues to protect our families and visitors.

The City of Phoenix is committed to continuously improve in all areas of constituent services, especially public safety. Therefore, when issues are identified, corrective actions are immediately taken. That is what we are doing!

All my best,

Ann

Councilwoman, District 1
