In this week's issue:

Message from Councilwoman Ann O'Brien

Dog.jpgHappy Friday, everyone! I hope you are all excited about the upcoming weekend. Did you know last Thursday was National Pet Day? In honor of the occasion, City Hall had a special visitor! I was able to bring in Sammy, my silver lab that we rescued in 2022. We were his fifth home in nine months. However, we are committed to making sure his forever home is with us! It was heartwarming to see how much joy Sammy brought to all the city staff who stopped by to say hello!

On Monday, I had the privilege of visiting the Phoenix Fire Department's 911 Dispatch Center to kick off National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. This was an excellent opportunity to honor the men and women who quite literally answer the call on someone’s worst day. Our Fire Dispatchers operate the Fire.jpgregional Fire Dispatch for almost all the cities and towns within the County. We also have a separate police dispatch center that focuses solely on Phoenix Police calls. The work done by our PD Communications Bureau is truly remarkable. For instance, did you know that our Crime Stop phone number receives an average of 50,000 calls per month? In March of 2024 alone, we handled 146,460 calls, with 94,540 calls coming into 911 and 51,920 handled by Crime Stop. Even more impressive, 84% of all 911 calls were answered within 20 seconds. These statistics highlight the efficiency and dedication of our dispatchers and first responders who ensure that help is always just one phone call away – allowing us all to rest easy knowing that assistance is readily available.

Following my visit to the 911 Dispatch Center, I had the honor of attending the opening of the newly renovated Phoenix Police FAC.jpgDepartment’s Family Advocacy Center. The FAC is more than just a building; it is a beacon of hope, compassion, and healing for victims of crime and their families. Within the walls of the center, individuals find solace, support, and the resources they need to navigate the challenging journey toward justice and restoration. I expressed my sincere gratitude to Commander Garza for her insightful leadership; Tim Thomas of the Phoenix Police Foundation for his excellent management in fundraising efforts; and the Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation for their significant contribution, which was instrumental in bringing this essential resource to life. The FAC represents a powerful message to survivors that they are not alone and that help and support are always within reach.

During Wednesday's Transportation, Infrastructure, and Planning Subcommittee Meeting, we discussed upcoming changes to text amendments that will significantly impact our city's development trajectory. These amendments cover various areas, such as updates to the downtown code, housing regulations, sustainable transportation initiatives, and modernization of commercial use standards. As we strive to address the pressing issue of housing shortage in our growing city, I am particularly enthusiastic about the expansion of townhome developments city-wide. Recognizing the crucial need for diversity in housing options, particularly for starter homes, this initiative represents a significant step towards addressing the issue and will support individuals and families in realizing their homeownership dreams. I am deeply committed to championing housing affordability and accessibility, and I have been actively leading efforts in this area by working closely with city staff to bring this important change which will come to fruition in the near future. We don’t just need more rentals and $650,000 new homes. We need more missing middle and starter homes. I plan to make that a reality while in office.

As we wrap up, I want to remind everyone about the upcoming Community Safety Fair GAIN Event at Cactus Park and Fish-tastic Saturday at Cortez Park, both happening tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing you there! Don't forget to bring your own chairs for the Cactus Park event, as seating may be limited. And who knows, there might even be some awesome swag waiting for you! For more information about these events, be sure to check out the details in the newsletter below.

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend ahead!

Crime Update

The officers of the Cactus Park Precinct actively work to address criminal activity in our community and we like to highlight a small fraction of this work with you, our community and business leaders. Regularly, the showcased examples start from a call for service from an engaged community member like you.

In an Emergency or to report suspicious activity 911 | To report a crime or non-emergency 602-262-6151 option #4 | Silent Witness 480-WITNESS

Here’s the latest update from Cactus Park Precinct:

On March 13, 2024, a burglary smash and grab occurred at a pawn shop in the area of 2600 West Glendale Avenue.  While fleeing from the crime scene the suspect dropped his phone which was recovered by responding officers.  Investigators authored a search warrant for the phone which led to the identification of the suspect.  On April 16, 2024, investigators, working with our Cactus Park Precinct Neighborhood Enforcement Team, located and apprehended the suspect.  A search warrant was authored on the suspects apartment which led to the recovery of additional items of evidence.  The suspect was booked on multiple charges.  This was an incredible example of the seamless teamwork between our investigative details and our precinct Neighborhood Enforcement Team.

On April 17, 2024, the Phoenix Police Traffic Bureau conducted a traffic impact program along Grand Avenue from Camelback Road to McDowell Road.  This program was in response to community complaints received by the Traffic Bureau as well as the observations of motor officers who witnessed hazardous driving behaviors in the area.  The results of the traffic impact program as follows:

  • 33 vehicles stopped
  • 29 citations issues
  • 4 educational stops
  • 3 vehicle tows

Top speed cited:  95-mph in a 45-mph zone.

City Launches Community Survey

Zencity Feedback - IG Square.pngThe City of Phoenix is ready to launch the community survey. This survey asks questions on a wide range of topics around life in our community—from what residents think is working, to where they see a need for improvement—providing feedback that is used to calculate ongoing satisfaction scores. The survey is one more way to gather information from residents in our effort to more holistically understand neighborhood issues and enhance our responsiveness to community priorities.

The survey takes less than five minutes to complete and is available in both English and Spanish. The survey system sets response targets based on Census data to ensure community representation. Survey responses will be anonymous.

The survey is served up to residents on various websites and social media platforms. Residents can also respond to the survey directly with this link.

We’ve also created a survey landing page on Phoenix.gov to answer questions, including the security and privacy of the survey.
