Message from Vice Mayor Ann O'Brien
One of my favorite things about being Vice Mayor is creating public-private partnerships that help residents. I’m thrilled to share that Phoenix REALTORS have stepped up again to support the lockbox program we piloted in District 1 and was recently launched citywide. Phoenix REALTORS initially donated lockboxes for us to test the program and the group will provide an additional 400 lockboxes! Free lockboxes are available to Phoenix residents who are over 55 years old or have mobility challenges or disabilities that may prevent them from reaching the door in an emergency. The lockbox codes are securely stored at the 911 Dispatch Center and shared only with first responders during emergency calls so that they can quickly and safely respond without causing damage to the home. To date, our firefighters and community assistance program employees have installed about 250 lockboxes, and they average 20 installations a week. Thanks to the generosity of Phoenix REALTORS, we should have enough to last the rest of this year. Today marks the 35thanniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This important civil rights law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of public life and works to ensure they have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. At City Hall, our Disabled Employees Allies and Leaders (DEAL) group marked the anniversary, as part of Disability Pride Month, with a social event after work followed by a screening of the documentary, Deaf President Now! about the student protests at Gallaudet University. DEAL is the city’s newest employee group, and I was happy to participate in their first major event. I always appreciate the opportunity to support our employees and thank them for their public service.
I’m looking forward to Monday evening—how often do you hear that? Seriously, I’m excited because I’ll make my first appearance on Arizona PBS this evening. I’ll join Arizona Horizon host Ted Simons to talk about the site of the former Metrocenter Mall. It’s been five years since Metrocenter closed and I’ll be sharing an update on The Metropolitan, the $850 million redevelopment project. Some of you saw drone video of the construction site at a recent District 1 community meeting. I’ll share that video with Horizon’s audience, along with renderings of the 68-acre housing and retail project. Images will highlight pedestrian friendly shopping, an amphitheater, a dog park, as well as a swimming pool, pickleball courts and restaurant on the roof of a parking garage. I hope you’ll tune in to Arizona PBS at 5 and 10 p.m. tonight!
