Dear District 8,
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season surrounded by your loved ones.
This year has been off to a busy start. Since my last newsletter, I joined community members and Street Transportation Department Director Joe Brown to commemorate the activation of Phoenix's 90th pedestrian signal crossing. The newest signal, formally referred to as a HAWK (High-intensity Activated crossWalK), is located at 20th Street and Broadway Road. Community advocates led the project to install the HAWK at this location following the fatal hit-and-run collision of Tanya Karim in 2019. The signal activation is an example of the city working with community members and its residents to make improvements that matter. The hit-and-run is unsolved and Phoenix Police detectives are still seeking information. Community members are encouraged to contact Silent Witness if they have any information on this crime click

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Secretary Xochil Torres Small visited the USDA and University of Arizona demonstration farm in District 8. I participated in a roundtable with stakeholders to discuss urban agriculture. The City of Phoenix is an important partner to USDA and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in urban agriculture initiatives. The City of Phoenix is receiving $250,000 as a sub-awardee of USDA’s cooperative agreement with the University to promote urban agriculture in the Phoenix metro area (executed last year).
The 2024 Men's Final Four Host Committee, the NCAA, and Degree are teaming up to refurbish the indoor and outdoor basketball courts at the historic Eastlake Park. I was excited to join our partners to announce the NCAA Men's Final Four Legacy Project, in our district. The project will include adjustable hoops and backboards, a new scoreboard with a shot clock, new benches and bleachers, wall padding, weight room equipment, and more. This is one of many community projects that will be undertaken as the Valley prepares to host the 2024 Men's Final Four. Work on this project is set to be completed before the start of the 2024 Final Four on April 6.
Digital Equity Insitute and the City of Phoenix Housing Department held a grand opening of the Hive at Aeroterra. The Hive is a dynamic space dedicated to fostering digital skills and providing free access to computers for the local community. I encourage District 8 residents to check out this FREE community resource at the Aeroterra Community Center (1727 E McKinley St, Phoenix, AZ 85006).
The City of Phoenix is hosting community presentations to provide information on the status of the Department of Justice (DoJ) Investigation of the Phoenix Police Department. There will be a meeting in District 8 today at South Mountain Community College (see more information and additional meetings below). I hope to see you there! For those unable to attend, please click here
