The City of Phoenix will host several Community Budget Hearings
to hear from the public about the 2024-25 City Manager's Trial Budget. The public is invited to attend these hearings to provide comment on the proposed budget. This public discussion is among the reasons the city's budget so closely matches the community's highest priorities each fiscal year.

Weatherization Assistance Program
Cool down your energy bills before the summer heats up! The Weatherization Assistance Program makes your home more energy efficient, resulting in reduced energy bills. Our energy audit assesses your home to identify improvements that could decrease your utility bills, such as sunscreens, insulation, HVAC systems, water heaters, and other appliances rated for energy efficiency. Keep weeds under Control
We are moving rapidly into “weed” season. Weeds are not only an eyesore, but they also pose a health and safety concern by harboring pests such as mice and insects. Here are some tips to control and prevent weeds from proliferating:
- Don’t leave roots behind – grab the weeds close to the ground and pull them straight up to ensure the roots are intact.
- Weed after watering or rain – a moist ground makes it easier to pull the weeds.
- Use mulch – especially with a weed preventer mixed in, to keep weeds from germinating, but still support the growth of your garden plants.
- Try spraying vinegar – uniformly coating the leaves. Regular household white vinegar can kill young weeds effectively.
- Take advantage of NSD’s Tool Lending Program
– to do a neighborhood cleanup that will require the elimination of weeds. This program is available to neighborhood groups and associations listed with NSD’s Neighborhood LINK.

Meet Your Friendly NSD Team Member: Rosie Espinoza, Neighborhood Specialist
The Maryvale One Square Mile Initiative is a program developed to create impactful changes on the challenges in the Maryvale community. Led by faculty and staff of Arizona State University’s (ASU) Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, the Initiative was recognized in December 2023 with the ASU President’s Medal for Social Embeddedness.
NSD Specialist Rosie Espinoza was invited to accept the award and be recognized for her contributions to the Maryvale Initiative, by helping connect and build relationships between the ASU educators and residents. Rosie also helped facilitate meetings with the Maryvale Youth Leadership group to encourage teens to play a more active role in improving their community.
Rosie’s career with the City of Phoenix began in 2022. She grew up in the Maryvale area, and is a graduate of Maryvale High School. She recalls the 1990s and 2000s as being great eras for Maryvale because of the changes and evolution that happened in the area. She is grateful for Maryvale’s diversity and the residents’ love for community and family. With her undergraduate degree in Coaching and Healthy Lifestyle, and a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from ASU, Rosie continues to help Maryvale and its neighboring areas achieve an improved quality of life by building meaningful relationships with external and internal partners.

Controle las malas hierbas
Entramos de lleno en la temporada de las malas hierbas. Las malas hierbas no sólo son una molestia para la vista, sino que también suponen un problema para la salud y la seguridad al albergar plagas como ratones e insectos. He aquí algunos consejos para controlar y evitar la proliferación de malas hierbas:
- No deje raíces - agarre las malas hierbas cerca del suelo y arránquelas hacia arriba para asegurarse de que las raíces están intactas.
- Quitar las malas hierbas después de regar o llover - un suelo húmedo facilita arrancar las malas hierbas.
- Utilice mantillo (mulch) - especialmente uno mezclado con un compuesto de anti hierbas, para evitar que las malas hierbas germinen, pero sin dejar de apoyar el crecimiento de las plantas de su jardín.
- Pruebe rociar las hojas con vinagre. El vinagre blanco de uso doméstico puede matar eficazmente las malas hierbas jóvenes.

Rosie Espinoza, especialista de la NSD, fue invitada a aceptar el premio y a ser reconocida por su contribución a la Iniciativa Maryvale, ayudando a conectar y a establecer relaciones entre los educadores de la ASU y los residentes.
