Message from Councilwoman Ann O'Brien
Hello from chilly, windy San Francisco! I’m attending a board meeting for WestEd, a nonpartisan research, development, and service agency that works to promote excellence, improve learning, and increase opportunities for children, youth, and adults. I’ve been a WestEd board member since 2018 and I began serving as Board Chair on Thursday. I’m excited to continue advocating for innovative programs and data-driven solutions to support students and educators. A key WestEd project in Arizona is the “Supervisors of Principals Academy”. It provides in-depth professional development and mentoring for new and experienced supervisors of school principals. So far, the academy has worked with more than 60 central office administrators who support more than 250 principals statewide.
I’m thrilled to share an update on my fight to get Phoenix our fair share of federal resources. You may recall, I traveled to Washington, D.C. in May for a meeting at the White House with Christine Glassner, the Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. The meeting was a result of me contacting the White House to express my concerns about federal cuts to critical city projects, especially the North Gateway Advanced Water Purification Facility. This facility, along with two others in the city, will help reduce our reliance on Colorado River water and create a sustainable solution to Phoenix’s water needs. The city had received preliminary approval for a federal grant to help with construction of the new water purification facility, but then we heard nothing for months. With more families and businesses calling Phoenix home, I had to take action. I’m pleased to share the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation notified us this week that it’s ready to finalize an agreement with Phoenix for the North Gateway Advanced Water Purification Facility. It will include a $179 million federal investment to help design and construct water purification infrastructure that will treat up to 8 million gallons of water daily.
Finally, in honor of Parks and Recreation Month, I want to express my gratitude to our employees who support a vibrant, healthy community—from maintaining our parks to offering programs that bring neighbors together. Their work touches livers in so many ways, and their work deserves our recognition.
