The Phoenix Police Department is accepting applications for its next Citizens Academy, which starts on Tuesday, September 1, and runs for five consecutive Tuesdays. This valuable program takes residents behind-the-scenes, providing an in-depth look at department operations. The Citizens Academy began in 1986 and, since then, more than 90 academies have introduced the public to tactical training, firearms and decision-making, investigations, 911 communications, crime lab, air support, and the K9 unit. Applicants must be 18 years old, pass the required background check, and commit to all five Tuesdays, beginning September 1. The deadline is fast approaching for a youth art contest as part of the City’s 9/11 commemoration. Through the City’s Office of Youth and Education, young people have spent weeks participating in focus groups, sharing ideas, and designing events to ensure the lessons of September 11,2001, continue to inspire future generations. The first youth-led initiative is our Citywide art contest for K-12 students. Young artists are invited to reflect on the themes of service, honor, and unity. Submissions must be one-dimensional, on standard, 8 ½” x 11” paper, and depict positive images that represent unity, hope, and acts of kindness. Submissions will be featured during City-hosted events and selected winners will receive free admission to an upcoming Phoenix Suns or Mercury game. I hope you’ll encourage young artists to enter.
