SUMMER TEEN VOLUNTEER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

Pecos Community Center has welcomed 14 teen volunteers this Summer. The teens have been assisting with the PCC PHXplays Summer program for kids ages 6-12. The assignments range from helping one of the 6 different groups to being assigned to either the art room or gym. The teens rotate assignments each week to avoid complacency and also to ensure that they get to experience helping in all aspects of the program. It’s not all work and no play as they also get to go swimming each week and interact with the younger kids by playing a variety of games, doing crafts, and leading activities. The volunteer program is designed to mimic real-life job experience as they are required to fill out timecards and have weekly meetings and reviews. The teens have volunteered a total of 701 hours so far this Summer.

PARK STEWARDS: TRAIL HEROES

Last week, the Phoenix Mountains Preserve might happen upon the Trail Heroes, a dedicated group of Phoenix Park Stewards, who have spent the last year working to restore a half mile section of the Freedom Trail 302 (located SW of Piestewa Peak). Over 60 volunteers have donated over 1,500 hours to rebuilding this rocky washed-out trail, creating sustainable tread and stone structures to support the increased trail use and to help prevent future damage from monsoon rains.  Lead by volunteer park steward Beth Keune, the Trail Heroes crew builds camaraderie by naming the large boulders moved with a rock sling, strategically harvesting and replanting cholla to keep hikers on the trails, and building rapport with local hikers.

SKY HARBOR NAVIGATORS

Volunteering as a Navigator is a great way to get involved at America’s Friendliest Airport® and help thousands of daily passengers! The Navigators wear bright purple jackets or shirts and are eager to provide answers. Need directions to the airport shuttles? Need to page a passenger in the terminal? Or if you need some information about the airport’s shops and restaurants, the friendly Navigators are the go-to people for these questions and more. Visit skyharbor.com/volunteer to complete an online application or call (602) 273-4017 for more information.
