News From the City of Phoenix
Bike Lanes and Street Parking Coming to District 1
As part of the Street Transportation Department’s core mission, we strive to improve the City’s roadways to create a safe and efficient transportation network. Our ongoing pavement maintenance program provides opportunities to change the current traffic lane striping to improve safety for people who walk, drive, ride bicycles and use transit.
About the Project
Where: Casino Avenue from North Valley Parkway to Melvern Trail.
What: Where there is enough space on the roadway, buffers will be added to existing bike lanes. The number of travel lanes will remain the same. This project does not remove or add parking.
When: Traffic lane improvements will be made in Winter/Spring 2022.
Why: Buffered bicycle lanes add space between people driving and people walking or biking for increased protection from vehicles, improved safety and added comfort. Additionally, the slight narrowing of the lane widths to accommodate the buffered bike lanes will help to guide cars and deter speeding. The proposed bicycle lanes also provide connectivity between other nearby bicycle lanes.

City of Phoenix Awarded $1 Million to combat Neighborhood Violence
The Office of Government Relations is proud to announce that the Phoenix Housing Department was awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation (BCJI) Program. BCJI grant funds are targeted specifically at distressed neighborhoods that face serious and violent crime challenges. Funds will be utilized to support and address serious and violent crimes, including weapons-related violence, drug issues, property crimes, sexual assault, and domestic violence in the Edison-Eastlake Community.
The Edison-Eastlake Community contains the largest concentration of public housing in Arizona. High incidences of violent crime plague the neighborhood, and the need for greater safety is an ongoing concern raised by residents. Funding will also include a comprehensive community analysis in the planning phase using data to assess crime and safety, and will utilize the findings to guide the development of strategies to address crime in targeted hot spots. The project will work towards meeting the four BCJI goals: (1) Analyze crime conditions to refine the Edison-Eastlake BCJI Action Plan to ensure incorporation of evidence-based solutions; (2) Use trust-building efforts to improve relationships between the community and police; (3) Build capacity of community and cross-sector partners to identify, implement and monitor interventions; and (4) Implement strategies that deter criminal activity including serious, violent, and chronic crime.
For more information about grants, please call 602-262-1833 or visit the Phoenix Office of Government Relations website.
