In this week's issue:

Message from Councilwoman Ann O'Brien

Happy Veterans Day to all those who have served our country and for all those who continue to serve our country. We would not have the freedoms we have today if it were not for the sacrifice each and every member of our Armed Forces makes every day. If you see a veteran today, please take the time to stop them, and thank them for their service.

Vets.jpgToday, I had the honor of joining my fellow Council members Jim Waring, Yassamin Ansari and Mayor Gallego, and Congressman Stanton, along with State senators and representatives, as we cut the ribbon on a new transitional housing facility specifically for our men and women who served our country. The City purchased the old Holiday Inn within our district off 28th Dr and Cactus and is leasing the property out to an organization called U.S. Vets. This organization provides shelter and services to our veterans who are, unfortunately, experiencing homelessness. I'm honored to represent this facility and am so grateful to former District 1 Councilwoman Williams for doing all the hard work in getting it here during her tenure. It really is a blessing to know that now, our veterans will have a warm and comfortable place to sleep at night. I cannot express enough how important it is that we continue to take care of our veterans as they have taken care of our freedoms. God bless them!

Earlier this week, I met with the current owners of MetroCenter Mall to begin discussing the importance of keeping the area clean and the community safe while we're in the midst of ongoing discussions about redevelopment. It's important that future developers see a vibrant community ripe for reinvestment when they view the area. We had some great conversations and I know I keep saying this, but I promise, good news is coming so soon and I'm so excited to share it!

I also spent the week meeting with Community Bridges, Inc, an organization which this City partners with for homelessness outreach and delivery of services. I expressed the concerns we received from you about the increase in transient activities in our communities. They came prepared with data that showed an uptick in these cases. We're working together to brainstorm solutions and ideas with how we can handle these issues. Studies show that when we bring services and shelters to the areas of need, these areas clean up a lot faster than when we attempt to bus the problem to another part of town. We must work to create comprehensive solutions for individuals experiencing homelessness and I will work to provide the services needed to get vulnerable individuals off the streets and help them become contributing members of our community once again.

We had our Public Safety and Justice subcommittee on Wednesday where we reappointed seven judges to the City's court system for 4-year terms. Additionally, we voted to move forward a request to replace our City's security camera system with new and updated cameras to prepare for the Super Bowl in 2023. Although the big game is played in Glendale, Phoenix hosts many of the events in our downtown core. It's critical for public safety that we have dependable cameras that can produce clear, visual data when our securities are threatened.  I look forward to supporting this item when it comes to the full Council agenda.

911 tour.jpgDirectly after our subcommittee meeting on Wednesday, I took a tour of the 911 dispatch center in South Phoenix. The 24/7 work this center puts in is vital to the ongoing safety of our City. It's not an easy job, as I learned. These folks go through months of training before they're ever put at a station to work as a 911 operator. They continuously monitor not just one screen, but six different screens at all times while answering calls. The work they do is beyond amazing! In the same building is where our Phoenix Police also stores property collected by officers and detectives from crimes committed and cases still working their way through the courts. With over 1.6 million items, the building is bursting at the seams! Items are returned to their owners once the cases are finished. It was fascinating to hear about their coding and logging system and how they keep track of everything!

Space Jam.jpgLast night, Deer Valley Community Center held the first movie in the park for the City of Phoenix. Over the summer, my office donated the items necessary to put on these events for our community. We donated the projector, screen and two speakers for use all over the City of Phoenix for families to enjoy some quality time and Phoenix's fall weather. I had the honor of welcoming everyone to this year's first Movie in the Park event, which featured the Michael Jordan's Space Jam movie. I can't wait to have more of these movie night events! The next one is going to be at Beuf Community Center on Wednesday, November 24th!

As we head into the holiday season, many families aren't as fortunate and sometimes need help making the holidays merry and bright for their children. Even before becoming your Councilwoman, I have always worked within the community to collect toys, gift cards, grocery store gift cards, and foods to donate to families in need. This year is no different. My office will be collecting items for families in need and I'm asking you to help us collect and donate. Nothing is too small! Soon, we'll partner with a few locations around the district where you can drop items off, but for now, if you are able to donate anything, please contact my office and we can arrange for pickup; or bring it to our next community meeting on Monday, December 6, at the State 48 Brewery in the Norterra Shopping Center.

Lastly, I want to send my heartfelt my condolences to the family of Lt Chad Brackman of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, who passed away yesterday. Lt. Brackman was struck by a vehicle while helping to direct traffic in the City of Scottsdale. Lt. Brackman was a 22-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office and I cannot even begin to imagine the loss his family and the Sheriff's Office must be feeling right now. Please remember to hug your children and tell your family how much you love them every chance you get. His family will be in my prayers and may he rest in peace.

All my best,

Ann

Councilwoman, District 1
