AmeriCorps Week

AmeriCorps Week is upon us! We’re so grateful to all the AmeriCorps members who have served at the City of Phoenix over the years & helped to alleviate poverty, foster civic engagement, and are catalyst to help improve our communities!

Volunteer Opportunity: Become a Teen Volunteer

Phoenix Public Library will be accepting teen volunteers for summer at all 17 libraries this year. Applications will be available on Volunteer PHX in April. Spaces are limited. Candidates must be 13-17 years old and have parent or guardian permission to participate. Volunteers will work under the direction of library staff to assist with the annual summer reading program, as well as other tasks such as sorting and shelving books, assisting with programs, and preparing crafts. Each volunteer will receive a free t-shirt, tons of great job experience and the appreciation of library staff.

Volunteer Opportunity: Book Club Facilitator

With training provided by Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) and the support of Phoenix Public Library staff, volunteer facilitators guide activities in weekly, community-based book clubs for adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities. The primary function of this position is to promote literacy skills, social connectedness, and community inclusion for book club members. Working in teams of two or three, volunteer facilitators also provide the NCBC home office with biannual feedback.

Volunteer Opportunity: YMCA Outreach Program for Aging Seniors (OPAS)

OPAS offers FREE support services for seniors in need through partnerships with incredible volunteers across the Valley (transportation, grocery shopping, friendly visits, household assistance, etc.). We are currently in great need of volunteers to join us in making a life changing impact for seniors in Ahwatukee, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the West Valley.

Volunteer Highlight: Parks and Recreation

Last Saturday, February 25th ASU Watts College held a Day of Service at Desert West Park. Northwest division maintenance staff and 75 volunteers from the Watts College assisted with cleaning the park from 8:30am-11:30am. Volunteers assisted pulling weeds, painting parking lot curbs, applying wood chips in the playground and cleaning the skatepark.

Volunteer Highlight: Zero Waste Ambassadors

Over the course of Super Bowl weekend, Fifty-one Zero Waste Ambassadors generously contributed more than 200 hours of their time to assist our City in reaching its ambitious 92% waste diversion goal, resulting in less garbage and recyclables being sent to our city landfill!
